Stimulant intoxication vs withdrawal

Sympathomimetic presentation tied to stimulant use (cocaine, amphetamines).

How it presents

intoxication: euphoria, hypervigilance, tachycardia, hypertension, paranoia; withdrawal: dysphoria, fatigue, hypersomnia, increased appetite

Tell it apart from

  • Bipolar I disorder manic episode
  • Anxiety disorder

Treatment reasoning

Intoxication: supportive care, benzodiazepines for agitation. Withdrawal: monitor, supportive care; avoid stimulants; refer to SUD treatment.
