Schizoaffective disorder

An uninterrupted period of illness with a major mood episode concurrent with active psychosis; hallucinations/delusions present ≥2 weeks without mood symptoms.

How it presents

delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, catatonia/negative symptoms PLUS major mood episode; psychotic symptoms persist outside mood episodes

Tell it apart from

  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar I disorder with psychotic features
  • Major depressive disorder with psychotic features

Treatment reasoning

Antipsychotics for psychosis; mood stabilizer or antidepressant based on mood polarity; psychosocial rehabilitation.
