Obsessions and/or compulsions that are time-consuming or cause marked distress.

How it presents

recurrent intrusive thoughts/images/urges (obsessions), repetitive behaviors or mental acts to reduce anxiety (compulsions), >1 hr/day, not due to substance/medical condition

Tell it apart from

  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Tic disorder

Treatment reasoning

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) first-line, SSRIs (higher doses); clomipramine as alternative.
