Major depressive disorder

Two weeks of depressed mood or anhedonia plus additional symptoms causing impairment.

How it presents

depressed mood, anhedonia, sleep/appetite change, psychomotor change, fatigue, worthlessness/guilt, poor concentration, thoughts of death; ≥2 weeks; no manic/hypomanic history

Tell it apart from

  • Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia)
  • Bipolar depression
  • Bereavement
  • Adjustment disorder

Treatment reasoning

SSRI/SNRI first-line, CBT/behavioral activation; combined for moderate-severe; suicide risk assessment first.
