Factitious disorder

Individual (or induces in another, for another = factitious disorder imposed on another) falsifies, induces, or exaggerates illness to assume the sick role.

How it presents

deceptive production of symptoms, inconsistent history, desire for treatment, no external incentive (distinguishes from malingering)

  • Somatic symptom disorder
  • Conversion disorder

Treatment reasoning

Establish early nonconfrontational therapeutic relationship; consult medical/psychiatric; document clearly; avoid unneeded procedures.
