Bipolar II disorder

Hypomanic episodes and major depressive episodes; no full mania or psychosis.

How it presents

hypomania: elevated mood, increased energy, decreased need for sleep ≥4 days, no marked impairment/psychosis; plus ≥1 major depressive episode

Tell it apart from

  • Bipolar I disorder
  • Major depressive disorder (recurrent)

Treatment reasoning

Mood stabilizers (lithium, lamotrigine for depression), CBT-IPSRT; antidepressants only with mood-stabilizer coverage due to switch risk.
